When to celebrate National Dog Day?

Once a year on August 26, we get ready to celebrate our four-legged friends. It is hard to believe that our furry friends have been with us for at least 14,000 years but it’s true. So glad we get the chance to enjoy their company, what would have we done without our best friends? It is the time of the year when we can spoil our favorite pups, pull out cakes and pictures and share our love for them with the world. In 2022, National Dog Day falls on a Friday. So, make sure to block some time for your beloved dogs and spoil them properly.

National Dog Day

It was pet and family lifestyle advocate Colleen Paige who established National Dog Day in 2004. The promotion of this day aims to raise awareness about adopting dogs that are currently in rescue centers. Colleen Paige wanted to draw attention to the number of dogs in shelters. Many dogs need adoption and have yet to find their cozy place and call it home. August 26 is an important day for Colleen because this is when her family adopted her dog Sheltie when Colleen was 10 years old. In addition, this is the day when ownership of all kinds of breeds, pure and mixed should be promoted. Dogs deserve to live in a safe, happy, and abuse-free environment and this is a great opportunity to celebrate this. Every pup should be celebrated on August 26.

Since its first celebration Dog Day is now celebrated across the world. The interesting fact is that in 2013 this holiday was added to New York legislation and you can see it on the New York State Senate’s website.

To spread the word and strengthen efforts, those who are in charge of holidays have united with many rescue partners. They have joined forces with The Human Society of the United States and also West Coast Labrador Retriever Rescue to emphasize the importance of the number of dogs that do not have a home. They wanted to encourage people who were thinking about getting dogs, to visit adoption shelters and adopt dogs, instead of going to pet stores.

How did the holiday influence dog adoption culture?

Since the establishment of National Dog Day approximately one million dogs were adopted in the U.S. For those who have dogs and aren’t planning to add new members to their family, National Dog Day has become a day when they pamper their dogs. Dog day is a great chance to treat our loyal friends the way they deserve.

Colleen Paige also uses the holiday to show people numerous ways how dogs can contribute to our society. Dogs put their lives at risk for us by helping law enforcement track down bombs, or drug dealers and simply by assisting those who need it. Therefore, they play an important role for humans. Did you know that dogs are even able to identify cancer in patients?
