The promotion of this day aims to raise awareness about adopting dogs that are currently in rescue centers. Colleen Paige wanted to draw attention to the number of dogs in shelters. Many dogs need adoption and have yet to find their cozy place and call it home. August 26 is an important day for Colleen because this is when her family adopted her dog Sheltie when Colleen was 10 years old. In addition, this is the day when ownership of all kinds of breeds, pure and mixed should be promoted. Since its first celebration Dog Day is now celebrated across the world. The interesting fact is that in 2013 this holiday was added to New York legislation and you can see it on the New York State Senate’s website.
