What is a calendar?
It is a method of organizing days. This is done by giving names to periods of time, mainly days, weeks, months, and years. So, within such a system of a date is the designation of a single, particular day. A calendar appears to be a physical record [often paper] of the mentioned system. A calendar can also denote a list of various events that are planned, like a partially or fully chronological list of documents a calendar of wills, or a court calendar.
Intervals in a calendar known as months and years are usually, although not certainly, synchronized with the cycle of the sun or the moon. The lunisolar calendar was the most usual type of pre-modern calendar. To remain synchronized with the solar year over the long period, a lunar calendar occasionally adds one intercalary month.
Explaining the term “Calendar”
This term is taken from “calendae”, in the Roman calendar this is the term for the first day of the month. Calendae is related to the verb “calare” [to call out], relating to the “calling” of the new moon when it was first seen.
In Latin “Calendarium” denoted register, account book [as accounts were settled and debts were collected on the calends of each month]. In Old French, the above-mentioned term was utilized as “calendier” and from there in Middle English as “calender” by the thirteenth (13th) century. The spelling calendar is early modern.
Gregorian calendar
Gregorian calendar was named after Pope Gregory XIII, head of the Catholic church. The most prevalently utilized and internationally recognized civil calendar today is the Gregorian calendar. A standard year, within this calendar, consists of 365 days. During a leap year, in the month of February, there is a leap day. So, February has 28 days in a standard year, while in a leap year it has 29 days. The months: April, June, September, and November have 30 days in a standard calendar, and the rest have 31 days.
The adoption of the Gregorian calendar happened gradually over a period of centuries, and in spite of many proposals to further improve the calendar, the Gregorian Calendar still stays as the most commonly utilized dating system throughout the world.
